Meet Brendan Cole
Hello, my name is Brendan Cole and I am one of the new Therapists located at Health for Life Grand Rapids. In this post I intend to share a little about myself and how I ended up in the field of Counseling!
Before my career in Counseling was certain, I was a dedicated athlete my entire life. I played soccer since birth, wrestled for ten years in Minnesota, and ran track and field all the way through college where I became a 2x All American at Wheaton College, IL. When I was not competing, I could be found camping, hiking, or engaging an extra curricular activity. My active lifestyle shaped a massive part of who I am before I even realized it did.
When it came to my social life, I always knew that I wanted work with people. Even as an athlete, a significant part of my enjoyment in sports came from the bond created by working alongside teammates as we pushed towards a common goal. In other words, the journey I would take to accomplish that goal, no matter the outcome, is where I’d say a massive part of my therapeutic orientation comes from.
During my own journey, I really struggled with my mental health and I had no idea where my place in life was. As I grew in my relationships with friends, peers, and teammates, I realized how important it is for people to have a connection with one another and how no one should go through life’s difficulties alone. Eventually, I recognized I was right at home whenever I was lending a listening ear and support for someone who needed it, even individuals I had just met. I found that I had the ability to facilitate a process while simultaneously help people untangle the feelings and thoughts that seemed overwhelming. In my experience, I have often found that the most meaningful act we can do for one another is just physically be present.
I finally grasped hold of this newfound passion that was inherently part of who I was and completed my Masters in Counseling Psychology. I moved to Grand Rapids, and am happily a part of the Health for Life, Grand Rapids Team. With my experience in trauma therapies, along with general mental health and CBT, I hope to assist in a therapeutic process that brings healing and wellness to your life.
