Help for the Parents of Young Adults

The differences between an adolescent (teen) and a young adult are often quite subtle, yet the struggles for both the young adult and the parents of young adults can seem to change overnight and be much more challenging than even the teen years. Many young adults in the United States struggle with the transformation from childhood to adulthood, which can leave many parents frustrated, anxious, and even angry. For instance, what is a parent to do if they find that their young adult is getting into trouble, not pursuing meaningful education or work, using drugs or alcohol, or even getting into relationships with nefarious people? Furthermore, what is a parent to do when their beloved child (who is now technically an adult) may be living at home, using their money and resources, and yet, is not respecting their parent or caregiver? What is a parent to do when they struggling to see their adult child as an adult and are working to have a more mature relationship with their child, but they cannot seem to make any headway in that area? What if your young adult suddenly has political and religious views that differ from your own? What is a parent to do in this stage of parenting? There are countless books on how to parent infants, toddlers, children, and teens–but not many that address this issue. Regardless, oftentimes books lack the answers and the process that most parents of young adults are seeking. If you are a parent of a young adult and are not sure where to turn, working with an experienced therapist who specializes in this topic area and has expertise with young adults may help you. At Health for Life Grand Rapids, we have multiple counselors and therapists that specialize in this area:
