An allergy is defined as a damaging response of the immune system to a substance, particularly a pollen, dander, food or dust. The person becomes hypersensitive to these, resulting in unwanted symptoms upon exposure. Your gut health and immune system are inextricably linked, in fact, 78% of your immune tissue is in your gut. The evidence is clear that the immune system is regulated by the gut and that allergies are a dysfunction in the immune system in response to an external substance (food, dust, etc). Allergies start in the gut and the treatment of allergies—even if the “symptom” is only seen with exposure to trees or grass, for example—must begin by addressing the gut health and the gut’s response to food.
The challenge is that many allergists are not yet testing gut health. Partly this is because of the systems-based nature of our health care system. Psychiatrists only look at the brain, gastroenterologists only look at the gut.
